Culture and handicrafts are major contributors to the development of travel and tourism in Burkina Faso. The country has a strong tradition of modern arts and crafts, such as woodcarvings, jewelery and pottery. Artists and tourists from around the world are also drawn to the Burkinabé cultural festivals, such as FESPACO (Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou), SIAO (International Art & Craft Fair) and FESTIMA (International Arts and Masks Festival). Visitors are also attracted to cultural and tourist sites, such as the Ruins of Loropeni and Laongo, the village of granite sculpture.
On Tuesday, 02 August 2016, during a six-week stay for a leadership internship in the United States of America under the Mandela Washington Followship Program for Young African Leaders, fifteen (15) Burkinabe participants out of the 1,000 young people selected in 2016, , met with the authorities of the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Washington, DC.
The meeting was an opportunity for the fifteen young Burkinabe leaders to exchange views with the Second Counselor of the Embassy, Mr Armand TIEMTORE, who for the occasion was assisted by collaborators, members of the Burkinabe community, as well as certain representatives the new office of the Burkinabe Association of Washington, DC and its Region (ABURWA).
Mr. TIEMTORE expressed the satisfaction of the authorities of Burkina Faso and of the Embassy that each year the participation of the young people is increasing in number in this training program with the American government in favor of African youth. He therefore invited the young Burkinabè to capitalize on the knowledge acquired during their stay in order to make it available to the other young people of Burkina Faso.
The United States African Development Foundation (USADF)
“Burkina Faso is celebrating its 57th year of independence on August 5, 2017. The U.S. African Development Foundation has been investing in grassroots enterprises in Burkina Faso since 2008, and funded more than 50 different projects ranging from agricultural produce like vegetables and sesame, to textile production and livestock management. These programs have targeted remote rural cooperatives and women’s groups, increasing their incomes and strengthening their communities.”
The United States African Development Foundation is an independent Federal Government agency that provides grants up to $250,000 to community-based development projects for populations in conflict and post-conflict areas in Africa.
The Foundation operates in twenty (20) African countries, including Burkina Faso. Since 2008, when USADF began programming in Burkina Faso, the Foundation has provided grants to 29 development projects amounting to $3.25 million.
